Facebook’s Tear-Jerking Spot Salutes Mothers & Their Babies Born In Pandemics

In celebration of Mother’s Day, Facebook unveiled a tear-jerking spot to spotlight mothers and babies who were born in stressful quarantine periods.

Created by advertising agency Droga5, the clip titled Born in Quarantine follows the narration of Anita Sampson, a 100-year-old woman who was born back in 1918 during the influenza pandemic that swept the lives of many.

“I was born during a quarantine,” Sampson said. “I don’t remember it of course, but from my mother, it was a very difficult time,” she described. “She told me it was just you and me for many months.”

“But she wasn’t alone,” the narrator continued. “Everybody tried to do what they could to help. But she was also a very strong person. And then it was over. We came out into a new world, my mother and me. We can get through this.”

The spot features emotive photos of babies who were born during the 1918 pandemic, as well as scenes of women who gave birth during the current coronavirus crisis.

Females highlighted in the spot include Denmark-based fashion and design professional Mona Omar, who is expecting a son; and the mother to a baby girl, Emma Sophoe Naesby Petersen.

Droga5 worked together with director Martin de Thurah and his partner Judith Lansade to capture the jaw-dropping scenes from homes and hospitals. “A million new mothers have given birth during the pandemic, and often alone, without their partners or families alongside them,” Droga5 Global CEO Sarah Thompson said. “As a mother myself, I can’t imagine how these women felt. This Mother’s Day, Facebook wanted to stand in solidarity with all new moms.”

Together with the clip, Facebook also introduced a new Parent Support Hub, which connects parents to resources that might help them navigate through this pandemic.
